Average Booking Strikes a Tariff 15 % Better than Any Other Site

Australia’s only hotel haggling website, www.graysescape.com, saw bookings jump 300 per cent last month, with savvy customers negotiating room rates an average 15 per cent better than those on other accommodation sites.

And GraysEscape.com, a GraysOnline offshoot which allows hotels and consumers to privately negotiate on rates lower than those on other booking sites, expects the number of hotels willing to bargain with customers to grow by 30 per cent by Easter as more hoteliers warm to the unique method of filling empty rooms without compromising brand integrity.

GraysEscape.com General Manager, Gary Berman, said the number of bookings on the site, launched in September, 2012, were up 300 per cent in December over the previous month as Australians seeking holiday accommodation overcame their traditional shyness to bargain with hoteliers.

Mr Berman said GraysEscape.com customers in December negotiated room rates an average 15 per cent lower than the best available, discounted rates available on other booking sites.

“We’re delighted the take-up of our unique haggling concept has been so quick and strong from consumers and hoteliers,” said Mr Berman, who sold the original Ubid4rooms.com concept to GraysOnline last year. “Under the bigger and better GraysEscape banner, business is progressing better than expected and we’re aiming for the number of properties on the site to grow by 30 per cent by Easter this year as we lock in new arrangements with channel managers and third party suppliers to expand our product offering.

“We have also received some great feedback from consumers and the accommodation industry. Customers enjoy the power and savings that haggling gives them and appreciate the flexibility the site offers in terms of buying a deal now or haggling for a lower rate, with hotels responding within three hours. Our linked haggle system was also very popular in December whereby customers offer a lower rate with three properties at once, with the hotels then competing with each other for the business.

“And hotels clearly see how GraysEscape.com can help them fill rooms that otherwise would have gone empty without publicly advertising discounted tariffs. There are more than 100,000 hotel rooms left vacant every night across Australia, which costs the industry hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue.”

Mr Berman said bargain-seeking holidaymakers could save money on www.graysescape.com by travelling outside peak times, holidaying away from the coast in summer, booking more than a month in advance and haggling on the site with three hotels at once.
